Cheshire Scouts are a go-ahead, innovative, county organization with more than 12,000 members from young people in the Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer sections, to the adult volunteers who ensure they have activities to participate in each week.
The county wanted a more formalised method of communication with its adult members – something which emphasized the quality of provision with Cheshire and the aspirational nature of much of the work that goes on – so commissioned a glossy A4 magazine for publication in the summer of 2015.
We undertook to produce an editorial contents list in collaboration with the County Commissioner, and sought out potential interview and feature subjects for the magazine. We were able to agree an interview with TV presenter Helen Skelton who was also to be the cover star for the edition.
We worked with county event organisers to source copy and pictures and attended events to collect information and take photographs of our own. Page proofs were shared with County Executive members to produce a final version to go to print.
We also sold advertising to support the costs of the publication and reduce the financial burden on the County.
Cheshire Scouting magazine was delivered to all adult volunteers and received very positive feedback for the quality of design, print standard and editorial content.
The success resulted in a further commission for the magazine to include Autumn/Winter content running into 2016 and to produce the County’s Annual Report for 2016/17, making bold use of photography from Cheshire events to highlight the dynamic, fun and adventurous nature of the Scouting experience.
